Katie Lowes Honored at the 6th annual SELF Magazine’s Women Doing Good Awards for her work with The Lollipop Theater!
SELF’S 2013 WOMEN DOING GOOD HONOREE
The Entertainer: Scandal‘s Katie Lowes
“To make people laugh in the darkest times is a relief,” Katie Lowes says. Hear more about this Woman Doing Good‘s worthy cause, the Lollipop Theater Network.
by Erin Bried
When she’s not portraying Quinn on Scandal, Katie Lowes spends time as a volunteer and fund-raiser for the Lollipop Theater Network, visiting sick kids at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center and doing whatever it takes to make them smile. “I’ll make crafts, gossip about Justin Bieber or dance like a psycho,” says the actress, 31, who worked as a babysitter and nanny for six years before her big break. “There are moments I’ll feel like crying, but then I’m like, Uh-uh. This is not about you. This is about you taking all of this sadness you feel and switching it in your mind to be able to have a good time. The kids want to enjoy what they still have.”
Why I give: ”I feel so lucky to be living my dreams. I get paid to do what I love, with people I respect, and I just got married to the love of my life [actor Adam Shapiro, above, with Katie on a hospital visit]. When things are good, you have to help people who are struggling. It’s our job as human beings.”
What I get: ”I hung out with this girl who weighed 60 pounds and had trouble talking and eating, and all she wanted to do was gossip about Hollywood. Honey, I can do that! Yet when you’re sitting next to a girl who would give anything to just have a body that works, you remember what really matters.”
Who inspires me: ”My costar, Kerry Washington, is a mentor to me in every way. And if she, who works 120 million hours a week, has time for charity, politics, friends and family, then I have no excuse. I find the hours. It’s a life-changer.”
Her Cause: Lollipop Theater Network
The group helps bring first-run films, music and arts and crafts to hospital-bound children ages 2 to 20.
